Alpro

I often enjoy Alpro snack pots as a treat in the evening, and I was lucky to be sent some other products to try out.

Some chocolate milk, strawberry milk, plain milk, vanilla snack pots, chocolate snack pots and some custard.

According to the packets, soya proteins use 5 times less land, 10 times less water and produce less CO2 products compared to animal proteins. Alpro only use non GM soya beans, and do not harvest their beans from the rainforest, and are working towards carbon neutral factories. It is nice to hear that a relatively large company are trying to do their bit- all too often it is only the small companies that try to be more ethical.

I enjoyed a carton of chocolate milk after one of my runs and it was lovely. It was really rich in flavour which was just what I needed after 12 miles of running. One carton is 250ml, and per 100ml it gives you 70 cals (175 per 250ml), 3.3g protein, 9.8g carbs and 1.8g fat. The milk is also free from dairy, wheat and made in a nut free environment, and the soya beans are non GM. 8/10 cherries

The chocolate dessert pots are one of my favourite items. They are so thick and creamy, and taste like flavoured custard (no hint of “bean” which I can taste in soya yoghurts). The second ingredient is sugar, so I don’t think they are an amazing health food or anything like that, but they do not have artificial sweeteners or gelatin or anything like that. One pot  is 110 calories, 4g protein, 3g fat, so a pretty good treat food. I love them out of the fridge and topped with crunchy granola, or on top of fruit. 10/10 cherries.

The vanilla dessert pot is like eating vanilla custard- delicious.

I really like it with either fruit, or some muesli, as the vanilla complements the other flavours really well. Basically where you would eat cold custard or sweet yoghurt, have this instead! A 125g pot gives you 100cals, 12.4g sugars, 2.2g fat, and over 3g protein, so again not the most healthy snack, but a much better option than a yoghurt loaded with aspartame or other artificial sweeteners. I love that this is really versatile- vanilla goes with pretty much everything. 10/10 cherries

The strawberry milk was very sweet.

I had it as a post run snack, as the 250ml carton sizes were perfect for this. I liked the fact that they had added calcium, B2 and B12. 250ml was 153 cals, 4.5g fat, 19g carbs, and around 8g protein. I was disapointed that the drink had no actual strawberries in it, only flavourings, whereas on the carton there are pictures of real strawberries. Although it was very sweet, it was great for refuelling after a long run. 7/10 cherries

Alpro Custard with vanilla

I was really excited to find this, as you could heat it up (whereas I was never sure if you could heat up the little dessert pots or not). It tastes exactly the same as “normal” ready made custard, plus it is only 81 cals per 100g. I enjoyed it warmed with some fruit and sprinkled with cereal, and we also made it onto a bread style pudding, baked in the oven, which was also delicious. 10/10 cherries
