Nairns

I love Nairns Oatcakes as a scrummy snack. I often buy the multipacks which have lots of packets of 2 (ginger, fruit and spice, mixed berry) which I leave in my cupboard at work. I have also had the dark chocolate chip ones which also come in a bag with packs of 2- yummy.

They were kind enough to send me a huge selection of their products to try out;

Lots of oatcakes.

And some Oat bakes :)

First up I tried the Rough Oatcakes. These were inside the box in packs of about 7 I think (to keep them fresh) and I love them! They are delicious with peanut butter (but then is there anything that isn’t nice with pb?) but I have also had them with cream cheese. I find them quite filling, despite their small size. 9/10 cherries.

The Fruit and Spice oatcakes are lovely- each one is 43 calories (so half of a regular biscuit) with also nearly a gram of protein and fibre in each one. They seem jam packed with currants, and are sweet enough to enjoy on their own. I love a couple of them mid morning with some tea. 9/10 cherries

The Dark chocolate chip oat biscuits are also delicious.

These are very similar to oat cakes, but with the addition of dark chooclate chips. They are perfect on their own (or with tea) but I also like them spread with a little nut butter (here I had one with homemade chocolate pb). Gorgeous. As each one is only 49 cals and 2.2g sugars, they are a much better choice than a typical chocolate biscuit, and I think they taste just as good. 10/10 cherries.

Then I tried the Oat bakes

The caramelised onion ones were lovely- They are like super thin oat cakes as oppose to crisps. I dipped them in cream cheese, which really went with the flavour. One bag is around 100 calories, and they added a nice crunch to my lunch. 8/10 cherries

Then I tried the Sweet Chilli ones.

I quite like chilli, so long as it is not too spicy, so again I had them with some cream cheese (thinking it would take some of the heat out) but in fact these were not spicy at all. They still tasted ok, but not my favourite. 5/10 cherries.

The Fine Milled Oatcakes were indeed fine!

They would go perfectly with either savoury or sweet things, and they had a lovely, more delicate texture. A simple list of ingredients- Oats, palm fruit oil (from sustainable souces), sea salt and bicarb of soda. They are low GI, and each one is 36 cals, 0.8g protein, 4.3g carbs, 1.8g fat and 0.6g fibre. You could not eat them on their own, but they would go with any topping you liked. 9/10 cherries

The cheese oatcakes were a pleasant surprise. I am not normally a fan of cheese flavoured things, but these had a subtle flavour. The packet had 8, so I had 4 with some chilli, and the other 4 another day with some bean stew. They were actually a great addition to my meals when I needed a few more carbs, but could not face cooking quinoa and had no sweet potato! 7/10 cherries

All in all, I really enjoyed these products. The sweet oatcakes are lovely as a snack on their own, and made even better by topping with nut butters (well, that makes everything better doesn’t it?). The plain ones (rough and fine) are perfect with either sweet or savoury toppings. The oatbakes were in handy small packs so would be a good snack on the go. SO thanks Nairns, I loved trying all those products and will be enjoying them as snacks in the future.

Also I know some people question palm oil as an ingredient (I often avoid it if I notice it) but they are members of the RSPO ( Roundtable on sustainable palm oil) who’s aims include

-           No new clearing of primary tropical forests
-          Conservation of natural habitats
-          Respect for indigenous people and millions of workers
